Photographing the Seasons of Familyhood

Photographing the Seasons of Familyhood

A collection of thoughts on the best time for family photos

As we move through the year, I’ve been thinking a lot about the different seasons of familyhood. How the ebbs and flows of autumn through to summer create so many opportunities to capture lifelong family memories – from blossoming bellies to cuddle puddles with the wiggliest toddlers, there’s a charm to all of the moments (big and small). Whatever the season, cool or warm, chaotic or calm, here’s to finding the perfect time to capture it, savour it and relive it over and over again.

Autumn amber hues

Autumn is one of the best times for family photos, with March and April offering an autumnal floral experience like no other. Set amongst a field of tightly petalled Dahlias on a restored farmstay in the Gold Coast hinterland, the blooms are tall, lush and perfect for family snaps with you and your littles. As with all of my mini photography sessions, the Dahlia Minis take just 20 minutes to capture lifelong memories. However, if you’d like more of an opportunity to soak up the warm afternoon sun (rain is less likely in autumn than summer!) and still get your littles off to bed on time thanks to earlier sunsets – autumn is the perfect season to book a full session.

Wrapped up in their love with winter family photos

Slow, snuggly and easy to style – there’s a different kind of magic to winter family photos. Cosy farm sessions finished with natural timber grains and rustic tin roofs are a beautiful backdrop for the slow season. And with our ‘Yeah the Boys’ Father’s Day minis quickly approaching, chunky knit sweaters and matching-jeans-with-dad are a farmhouse delight. A little celebration of boyhood, a nod to all our boy-mums and anyone who loves clambering into the front seat of a vintage mini or kicking a footy around. Plus, all full sessions booked during winter can be made sweeter by mentioning our hidden blog code ‘Winter’ for 10% off your session fee when inquiring.

Neutrals aplenty

The natural tones of autumn and winter are a neutral-lovers dream. Browns, tan grasses and muted evergreen trees create an endless opportunity to mix and match your favourite beiges to the natural backdrop of the season. Perhaps biassed, but I do think it’s the best time for full family photo sessions!

Daisy chains and a Spring in your step

Welcome the warmth with long spring evenings, daisy fields and infinite colour and flower combinations to play with. As we move out of the muted and cosy vibes of autumn and winter, Spring promises colour galore – making my late September/ early October Daisy Field minis a flower-dotted delight. Taking place amongst the rolling hills of the Scenic Rim, these mini photography sessions are the best time for dresses, skirts, bare shoulders and plenty of upside down sunkissed giggles between you and your loved ones.

Summer sunrises and balmy evenings

Since summer is synonymous with the beach, it makes sense that it’s the backdrop for so many salty sunrise and sunset photoshoots. From rippling waves to calm sea waters, we’re always guaranteed warm sand and sunshine during summer in south east Queensland. Perfect for the early bird tribe, swept-away maternity sessions or family snaps with slightly older kids – nothing compares to summer.
