The shift toward newborn in home photography

Everything you need to know for photos overflowing with sentimentality

While there’s certainly still a place for sweet chubby cheeks propped gently between ten tiny fingers – the shift to a more relaxed and sentimental form of newborn photography has been a welcome addition. There’s so much to love about newborn in home photography (aside from having all your cosy creature comforts at hand!), so my hope is that this blog inspires you and answers any questions you have about this style of photography.

Less planning, coordinating & traffic

Time and time again I have families tell me how much easier newborn in home photography is. As opposed to piling everyone into the car and racing the clock (and traffic) to get somewhere at a certain time, staying at home means no packing, organising or bargaining with busy toddlers. It also means that if your newest addition needs a nappy or outfit change mid-session, you’ve got all of your creature comforts at hand to keep enjoying a stress-free session.

More tiny details to remember forever

Whether you are renting or own your home, newborn in home photography is a beautiful way to capture the transient newborn bubble. Beyond the house itself, exist the rooms, spaces and belongings that are imprinted into the first few weeks of life with your new baby. The chair that rocks rhythmically for every 1.04am feed, the soft and worn blanket Nana knitted or the sweet keepsake memory box that holds all of baby’s newborn treasures are the tiny details that at home newborn pictures pay homage to.

And since it’s rare to stay in one place forever, there’s always the option to have your newborn photos printed into an heirloom album – so it becomes a travelling time capsule of those precious first weeks.

Happier siblings & natural poses

Newborn in home photography is also very natural. Older siblings are often in their element when they’re relaxed and able to show off their bedrooms and spaces, leading to smilier and more engaged pictures. Not to mention that we can take a walk outside or wander to your favourite nearby playground to add even more movement and meaning to your photos. I tend to keep posing to a minimum during a newborn shoot at home, opting to gently guide you into the best light or make small suggestions of how to hold baby for the best shots.

So, when to book newborn photo shoot?

One of the most asked questions is ‘when to book newborn photo shoot?’ and the answer is at least 3-6 months in advance. This will give you plenty of flexibility to secure a date when baby is around 10 days old. They will be at their squishest while still being calm and sleepy. It is worth noting that any time up until 6 weeks is perfect for newborn in home photography since we won’t be posing or swaddling your little one into positions.

However, don’t fret about timing too much, mama! I know that due dates are rarely exact, so there is always flexibility to shift your newborn in home photography session depending on when you go into labour and give birth.

Booking your newborn shoot at home

I’d love nothing more than to capture your newborn photos for you. My calendar is always changing (thanks to the oh-so sweet unpredictability of labour, baby’s and little ones!), so now is the perfect time to  reach out and see my availability for newborn photos – it’s never too late to capture tiny fingers and toes before they turn into toddling footprints!

From my mama heart to yours
