Presets FAQ

What are presets?

A Lightroom Preset is a pre-determined position of the of settings in Lightroom, and can also be described as a filter. In other words, you can edit a photo to your liking, and then save that exactly combination of slider positions for future use on another image. Lightroom allows users unlimited possibilities for adjusting settings such as exposure, contrast, tone, white balance and individual colours. I have developed my presets with my signature dreamy pink look for a variety of different scenarios and locations.

Are presets for me?

Presets are for anyone who enjoys photography and wants to add a high quality editing finish to their photos. This doesn’t mean you need to be a professional photographer, but you should be passionate about your photos.

Buying presets is an investment because as well as paying for them you will also need to pay for a Lightroom software subscription, unless you just plan to use the free mobile app and mobile compatible presets.

What influences the final look of a preset?

There are so many variables that influence the final look of a preset, including:

  • Lighting: Indoor/outdoor, time, month, season, weather, angle of the sun, cloud coverage
  • Location: Whether its beach, city, jungle, desert, each location has unique attributes, lighting and colours
  • Camera: Different brands and even models all render their photos slightly differently
  • Lens: As with the camera the lens you use will also render photos slightly differently
  • Camera Settings: Aperture, shutter speed and ISO are the most important settings and will determine how much light and focus your photo has
  • Skin tone: Everyone has a unique skin tone and certain presets will affect them differently, for example some people might turn out more orange while others might turn out more pink

So keep in mind that after selecting the most flattering preset, sometimes minor adjustments are still required. Usually this is only a couple of extra clicks. This is completely normal and something I do quite often.

How do I make the most of the presets?

Shooting your photos in RAW is the best way to make the most of your presets. Keep in mind that presets usually need a few slight adjustments due to the unique lighting each photo has. The main areas I suggest adjusting are the exposure, the temperature slider (blue and yellow), the tint slider (green and pink) and the oranges (for skin tone) and blues (for the sky) in the color mixer.

What is the difference between RAW and JPEG?

RAW files are saved with layers of information that allow you to edit much more precisely than other file types such as jpeg that are compressed at the time of shooting. RAW files which appear to be over or under exposed are often able to be saved in Lightroom because of all of the extra layers of information that was saved when the photo was captured.

Many many cameras these days shoot RAW, including point and shoots as well as some smart phones so it’s best to research your camera model to check.

Can I use these presets on my GoPro and Drone pictures?

Of course! But for the best results you should shoot in RAW on your GoPro/Drone and edit using RAW images.

Can I use these presets on the mobile app?

They are best used on the desktop (which is what I always do) however, when you purchase my presets you will also get mobile compatible files.

Are these presets compatible with Photoshop?

No these presets are only for Lightroom. I do not use Photoshop in my editing process.

What if I don’t like the presets?

All sales are final. However if you are having trouble applying the presets please email me your photo and I can help you!

  3. Save the files from your email to your phone files (do not try and open them, your phone will not recognise the file type)
  4. Open the Lightroom CC app on your phone
  5. Import the DNG files with the ‘Add from Files’ option into your Lightroom app
  6. You can now save the settings on the DNG files as presets in the Lightroom app by tapping the three dots in the top right corner and choosing ‘Create Preset’
  7. Name the preset then ensure the ‘Tools’, ‘Optics’ and ‘Geometry’ boxes are unticked, click into the ‘Light’ category and untick ”Exposure’ and  tap the tick in the right hand corner to save
  8. Now when you open a new photo you can apply the preset by choosing the ‘Presets’ tab from the bottom menu and tapping on a saved preset to apply it.
