How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve spent the past year creating seasonal capsule wardrobes and perfecting my formula. Below I am sharing my rough guide on how to build a capsule wardrobe including how many pieces and the breakdown for different clothing categories. Keep in mind that each person will have their own unique formula based on their lifestyle and clothing preferences.

How many pieces?

A rough guide would be anywhere between 30 and 40 items. This should include everyday clothing and shoes. I choose not include accessories jewellery, gym/sport clothes, swimwear or formal wear in my capsule.

How many colours?

Depending on your style I recommend having a palette of six colours which should be made up of three to five neutrals and one to three accents. This will depend on whether you prefer more neutral or more colour. You may even decide that you just want to stick to all neutrals and that works too.

For each category the specific breakdown of items will depend on the season, and the numbers for each category may be shuffled around to suit your lifestyle and preferences.
