The Best time to have a Maternity Shoot: A Comprehensive Guide

Expecting a baby is such a special chapter of life, and it’s natural to want to capture the experience with a maternity photoshoot. But when is the best time to have a maternity shoot? In this comprehensive guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know about the ideal time to schedule your maternity shoot and what to expect during the process.

The Best Time to Have a Maternity Shoot

The best time to have a maternity shoot is typically between 28-36 weeks of pregnancy. This is the period when your belly is big enough to show off your pregnancy, but you’re not too uncomfortable or too close to your due date. The exact timing may vary depending on the individual, as every pregnancy is different.

If you schedule your maternity shoot too early, your belly may not be prominent enough, and if you schedule it too late, you may be too uncomfortable or even meet your baby before you have the chance to capture the experience.

Something else to consider when choosing the timing of your maternity shoot is the weather. If you’re planning to have an outdoor shoot, it’s best to avoid the hottest months of the year, which can be uncomfortable. Or if you’re planning a winter maternity shoot, you’ll want to make sure you’re dressed warmly and comfortably. If you’re a little worried about the weather selecting an indoor location or studio is also a beautiful option.

Why 28-36 Weeks is the Ideal Time

As I mentioned, between 28-36 weeks is when your belly is large enough to show off your pregnancy, but you’re not too uncomfortable. During this time, your belly will have a beautiful, round shape that’s perfect for photographs. Plus, you’ll likely still have a bit of energy, so you won’t feel too tired during the shoot.

Around 36 weeks, some mamas start to feel quite uncomfortable and there’s also the possibility of going into labour early. On the other hand, scheduling a maternity shoot before 28 weeks may not give your belly enough time to fully develop and show off your pregnancy.

Preparing for Your Maternity Shoot

Once you’ve decided on the best time to have your maternity shoot, it’s time to start preparing. Here are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your photoshoot is the experience you’re hoping for:

  1. Choose the right clothing: You’ll want to wear something that shows off your baby bump, but also makes you feel comfortable and confident. Consider flowy dresses that button open, or anything that highlights your belly. I have a stunning client wardrobe with a range of hand selected pieces for my clients to borrow from so there’s no need to purchase something new.
  2. Consider hair and makeup: While it’s not necessary to have a professional hair and makeup artist, it can be a nice touch to help you feel confident and beautiful. If you decide to do your own hair and makeup, keep it simple and natural.
  3. Choose a location: Consider what type of location you want for your photoshoot. Do you want an outdoor shoot, or would you prefer something indoors? Do you want a backdrop or a more natural setting? I offer both with a curated location guide to help you select your perfect space.
  4. Hire a professional photographer: While you may be tempted to have a friend or family member take your photos, it’s best to hire a professional photographer who specialises in maternity shoots. They’ll know how to capture the perfect angles and lighting to create beautiful, timeless images. I always give my clients constant guidance on how to stand and where to look to create authentic and heartfelt images they will feel beautiful in.
  5. Relax and have fun: Above all, remember to relax and enjoy the experience. Your maternity shoot is a chance to celebrate this special time in your life, so have fun and let your personality shine through in your photos.

So in a nutshell, the best time to have a maternity shoot is between 28-36 weeks of pregnancy.
