#JAYDECAPSULESUMMER19 – MY SUMMER CAPSULE OUTFITS ON INSTAGRAM
I could not be happier to finally be putting this post together! Summer this year seemed to take forever to come around. As well as being my favourite season it has my favourite kind of wardrobe pieces too. I love natural fabrics and breezy dresses, cute dungarees and even a simple white tee and denim. Dressing in summer feels so easy.
Like with my last few capsules I have put a focus on including more and more sustainable and ethical brands. I am also very happy to report that I am definitely buying less and less with each new capsule. As I focus more on classic, quality investment pieces, the less I want to or need to replace items. This has always been one of my goals with my capsules, but I knew it would be a journey rather than an overnight change.
Right, so before we jump into my latest capsule – if you are new around here and want a little intro on capsule wardrobes before you dive into this post you can check out my capsule wardrobe 101 series here.
Sustainability and Ethics in my Capsules ECO
For the past six months I have been making a conscious effort to ensure any new pieces I add are coming from ethical/sustainable brands. After doing lots of research about the best (and most beautiful – because it’s still important to love what you wear) ethical/sustainable fashion brands I put together a list of my favourites here.
Look for the ECO symbol next to items that are from ethical and/or sustainable brands.
Black / White / Peach / Blush / Orchid / Sky Blue
The base pieces for this summer colourful capsule wardrobe are neutrals – whites and soft blushes. I like to keep half of my capsule wardrobe in neutrals (which for me also includes denim) because it makes mixing and matching different pieces much easier. It’s also a good idea to choose staple pieces (that you want to keep for years) in neutrals so they are more timeless.
Because it’s summer I’ve kept my palette light and airy with my accents – blush (always), peach, orchid and sky blue.
In my creating a capsule wardrobe post series I give guidelines around 30, 40 and 50 piece wardrobes. For my summer colourful capsule wardrobe my total count came to 37 pieces. I have had a varying number across my capsules so far and I have found that between 35-40 is a good number to try and stick to – enough pieces to mix and match but not too many that you start to get overwhelmed with choice.
Short Sleeved Tops x 6
Bird & Kite Lolita Top ECO (old, similar here ECO) / Bird & Kite Girl Meets Boy Top ECO (old, similar here ECO) / Everlane Air Crew Tee* ECO / NAKD Ruffle Tee (old, similar here ECO) / Madewell Courier Shirt (old, similar here) / Madewell Ruffle Shirt (old, similar here)
For summer I’ve included two camis, I love pairing them with skirts, shorts or pants for an instant summery look. Three out of four of my short sleeved shirts can be tucked in, which makes them far more versatile when pairing with high waisted bottoms. I’ve also balanced out my plain versus patterned pieces for versatility.
Long Sleeved Tops x 5
Son de Flor Peter Pan Collar Shirt* ECO / Everlane Stripe Box-Cut Long Sleeve ECO (old, similar here ECO or here ECO)/ Free People Blouse (old, similar here ECO) / Arnhem Lily Blouse ECO / Marimekko Silk Button Down* ECO (similar here ECO)
Like with my short sleeves I also like to include a mix of basics and features for my long sleeves. The basics are easier to layer on cooler days, pairing with skirts or jeans.
Light Outerwear x 4
I’m hoping there won’t be too much outwear going on this summer, but for the cooler days I’ve included a light knit, heavy knit, denim jacket and cardigan. This selection gives me enough variety without taking up too much space in my capsule (which I’d rather fill with summer dresses!).
Dungarees + Dresses x 7
Levi’s Vintage Shortalls / Innika Choo Daisy Dungarees ECO / Rowie Jessie Mini Dress ECO/ ASOS Button Up Dress (old, similar here ECO or here ECO) / Son De Flor Smock Dress ECO / Bardot Gingham Dress (old, similar here ECO) / Auguste Maxi Dress ECO (old, similar here ECO)
Yahoo for dungaree and dress season! There’s nothing I love more than an outfit made up of one piece – it’s so easy to get dressed! For my dungarees I have my classic denim pair and also a linen pair which almost passes as romper. My dresses are varying lengths from mini to maxi in a variety of colours and prints so I have plenty of different options throughout the season.
Skirts x 3
I’m a big fan of pairing a simple skirt with a cami or tee for an easy summer outfit, so I’ve included three skirts of varying lengths and colours in this capsule wardrobe. One thing to always look for in skirts (or dresses) is pockets – they are so handy!
Shorts + Pants x 5
Rhythm Amalfi Linen Shorts (or similar here ECO) / Everlane Cheeky Denim Shorts* ECO / Elizabeth Suzann Linen Pants ECO (or similar here ECO) / Mom Jeans (old, similar here ECO) / Madewell Roadtripper Jeans
For this summer capsule I’ve included two classic pairs of shorts – a linen pair and a denim pair. Last year I included more shorts, but this time I’ve used up those numbers for more skirts and dresses because I realised I enjoy wearing them more. I then have three pairs of pants, a cotton canvas pair and two pairs of jeans.
Shoes x 7
Birkenstock Arizona Slides ECO / Teva Sandals (old, similar here or here) / Saltwater Classic Sandals ECO / Sole Society Sandals (old, similar here ECO ) / Everlane Day Glove Flats ECO / Veja Esplar Sneakers ECO/ Blundstone Chelsea Boots ECO
I finally feel like my shoes are covering a wide range of weather and occasions. I love that all of my options are comfy, and can be dressed up or down. Because we do a lot of travel I have also included two pairs of comfy sandals that I can wear for long days on foot or summer hikes.
This capsule wardrobe has been put together for a northern hemisphere summer so is suitable for temperatures ranging from 20-35°C (68-95°F). I’ve included plenty of light pieces in natural fabrics like cotton and linen, as well as light outwear for layering on cooler days.
WORK FROM HOME / TRAVEL / CASUAL
We all have unique lives and styles so this capsule has been put together as an example. It also gives you some good insight into how many pieces you may want to include in each category. I work from home, travel quite a lot and have a casual style. This means that I choose comfy pieces that layer well without crinkling and are easy to pack. As an example, if you have an office job and/or dressier style you could swap long sleeve tops for blouses or button-up shirts, jeans for capris and sneakers for flats.
If you have a very contrasting style for work and home (for example you like being dressier for work and more casual for home) you may want to consider having two smaller seperate capsules to cater to both, or one larger capsule to include everything.
