Nars The Multiple (in Copacabana) / 6. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Priming Potion (in Original) / 7. Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara / 8. Stila Eyes are the Window Palette (in Soul)

The best makeup essentials you need to buy now

1. Primer: Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion

This paraben-free (yay!) primer has a beautiful velvety texture and glides on to the skin really easily. I love it because it has a matt finish, which helps control oily skin and keeps my makeup put all day long. It also helps to fill pores and fine lines, which I find stops my foundation creasing in my smile lines! Perfect under foundation, or for those lighter makeup days you can wear it alone to help even out skin tone.

Pros
  • Feels great on
  • Controls oily skin
  • Fills pores and fine lines
Cons
  • At around $40-50 it is a little pricey
Lasts for: 3-6 months
Cost: $40-50

2. Concealer: Nars radiant Creamy Concealer

I spent years searching for my perfect concealer. Most didn’t match my skin tone perfectly and/or creased up underneath my eyes after a few hours. Then I met Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer and we lived happily ever after. With 16 deliciously named shades you are likely to find your perfect tone match (Vanilla is mine). This concealer is light weight and buildable – it never looks caked on. I use it under foundation to cover blemishes and the dark circles that live under my eyes as well as on my light makeup days just to even out my skin tone. If there was one of my makeup essentials I couldn’t live without this would be it!

Pros
  • Provides great coverage
  • Doesn’t crease up
  • Buildable
Cons
  • I have nothing
Lasts for: 3 months
Cost: $30-40

3. Foundation: Bare Minerals Original SPF 15 foundation

I have tried powder foundations in the past that just dry out my skin, however this one has a creamy finish and I can get away with wearing it even in the driest winter conditions. Because you apply it with a brush in layers it is easy to adjust the amount you use dependent on how much coverage your skin needs, so you never waste any. I also love the little glow it gives your skin.

Pros
  • Doesn’t dry out skin
  • Lightweight and buildable
Cons
  • Takes a little longer to apply than liquid foundation
Lasts for: 6-12 months
Cost: $30-40

4. Contouring Palette: Urban Decay Naked Flushed [in naked]

If like me, you find the whole contouring thing a little scary, this little palette is the perfect place to start. With a bronzer, highlighter and blush in one palette it’s hard to go wrong. I am not a huge fan of sparkly bronzers and blushes and I find these perfect for a more natural look. They have just enough shimmer to create a radiant flushed glow. The colours are also nice and soft so you can build them up at your own pace.

Pros
  • Easy to apply and blend
  • Perfectly curated all-in-one palette
  • Natural looking
  • Six palette options to choose from
Cons
  • You have to be mindful not to mix the colours as they are side by side
  • The pre-selected shades may not work for every skin tone
Lasts for: 6-12 months
Cost: $50-60

5. Highlighter: Nars the Multiple [in copacabana]

One of my most recent makeup essentials is the Nars Multiple. I have this baby in Copacabana and she’s a dream! The iconic stick can be used for eyes, cheeks, lips and body but I mostly use mine to highlight. It creates a perfectly radiant glow when used as a highlighter on cheek bones, forehead, cupid’s bow and chin. Just be sure to apply with your fingers so that it melts in to your skin, using the stick directly can cause your foundation to drag.

Pros
  • Easy to apply and blend
  • Creates a radiant glow
  • Multiple uses
Cons
  • Using the stick directly on to your face can cause foundation to drag
Lasts for: 12 months
Cost: $40-50

6.  Eyeshadow Primer: Urban decay Eyeshadow Priming Potion [in Original]

Until recently my oily eyelids have made keeping my eyeshadow in place nearly impossible. So my Urban Decay Eyeshadow Priming Potion has been a godsend. I pop it on before my eyeshadow and let it set for a minute or two and ta-da, no more creasing eyeshadow! In the beginning, I made the mistake of trying to put on as little as possible as I thought a thicker layer would make things worse. However, don’t be afraid of putting a decent amount on and then rubbing it in well – it works much better.

Pros
  • Keeps eyeshadow put all day and all night
Cons
  • The packaging has a doe-foot applicator, I prefer to apply with my finger
Lasts for: 6-12 months
Cost: $20-30

7. Bobbi brown smokey eye mascara

I first tried this mascara as a sample and fell in love with it. I have always struggled with my mascara leaving big black smudges underneath my eyes by the end of the day, but no more! With kohl pigmented colour and a long wearing formula the Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara creates perfectly bold lashes without flaking, smudging or sweating off in high humidity situations.

Pros
  • A deep black colour
  • Doesn’t leave black smudges under the eyes
Cons
  • Too much product can cause clumping and black smudges, but this is easy to avoid by removing excess product from the wand before applying
Lasts for: 3-6 months
Cost: $30-45

8. Everyday Eyeshadow Palette: Stila Eyes are the window palette [in Soul]

I have tried a fair few eyeshadow brands, including the Urban Decay Naked Palette but I always come back to my Stila. I find their eyeshadows have a gorgeous velvety texture, glide on with ease and blend perfectly. Even the matt shades blend nicely. I love this palette because it has a mix of rose, yellow and white gold shades and it includes my favourite shade of them all – Kitten. If you haven’t tried Kitten yet, please do.

Pros
  • A perfectly curated mix of natural golden shades
  • Mix and match to create lots of different looks
Cons
  • Be careful when traveling with this one, some of the shades are quite delicate and can crack
Lasts for: 12-24 months
Cost: $50-70

So that is all of my favourite makeup essentials. If you’ve tried any of these products I’d love to hear your thoughts, or if you have any favourites I’ve missed please feel free to leave a comment below and share them.

  1. I can vouch for the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer and Nars Radiant Concealer 🙂 Love them both! I’d also recommend Urban Decay Cannonball for a waterproof mascara (great for yoga/gym when I’d usually opt for no makeup, and it also passes the swim test)… as well as Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick – it doesn’t feel heavy and mine has always kept put even when eating.

Ooh I’ll have to try the Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara next time…sounds perfect for yoga days! And yes I’ve tried the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick too and it probably should have made this list – it’s the longest wearing lipstick I have found so far and comes in so many tempting shades!

  2. Hi, I’m using the Bobbi Brown eye brow crayon in Taupe. It has a long shaped application, not the usual pencil shape which is great for applying to eye brow, and it is long wearing.
    Cheers Sandy

I haven’t tried that one Sandy but it sounds great! I do love all the Bobbi Brown makeup I have tried so I trust this one is good too! x
